TV on the Radio, “Forgotten”

What type of friend do you become when your friend is sharing his/her pains, sufferings, grievances?

You can either be the type who goes “hey now, it’s not that bad. You’ll be okay. Suck it up—you’re strong. You can do it, it’ll all work out in the end.” Your intentions are only to help your friend, you think of solutions or even “see, I told you so. Next time you should…” and maybe “it’s not that bad. Other people have it worse.”

Or the one that sits down, feels the pain, feels the hurt—even though you might have nothing to say, you sit with your friend, trying to process what your friend is going through. You may not agree with your friend’s opinions and you may not understand the reason why your friend is hurting. But you just sit next to him/her anyway. Essentially you’re giving up your privilege of not suffering at the moment, instead you choose to suffer with your friend. You sacrifice your perspective and try best to sympathize with your friend the best you can. Silence has never felt so peaceful.

Are you willing to give up that privilege so you can walk with your friend?
